The Senator wrote me back

Dear Ms. silva:

Thank you for writing to express your support for the John Stringer Rainey Save America's Forgotten Equines Act (SAFE) of 2021 (SAFE) Act (S. 2732). I agree that we should be doing more for the safety and well-being of horses.

As you know, the SAFE Act would outlaw horse slaughter operations in the U.S. and end the current export of American horses for slaughter. Additionally, this bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to classify horse meat to be unsafe for human consumption. This bill is currently being reviewed by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, I will continue to monitor its progress as it makes its way through the Senate.

Throughout my career, I have sought protections for animals. That is why I cosponsored the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act of 2019 (H.R.724/S.479). This legislation places additional penalties on individuals who intentionally injure animals and expands the scope of the law to include more types of abuse. Fortunately, this bill became law on November 25, 2019. I will continue fighting for legislation that protects animals.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please keep in touch with your thoughts and opinions.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer

United States Senator
