In the days before the duel, strange things happen in the palace, seen mostly through the eyes of Dragon 9 (Nick Cheung), a leader of the imperial guard who is also Yeh's childhood friend. Dragon 9 is a loyal and brave officer who likes to joke around and flirt with his girlfriend, Jade (Kristy Yeung), a prostitute who works at a nearby brothel. Dragon 9 is also close friends with Princess Phoenix (Zhao Wei), the emperor's sister who has a crush on Yeh.
As the duel approaches, several murders occur in the palace, and the evidence points to Snow as the culprit. Dragon 9, however, believes that Snow is innocent and tries to find out the truth behind the killings. He also discovers that Yeh and Snow have a mysterious connection that dates back to their childhood. Meanwhile, Princess Phoenix falls in love with Yeh and tries to persuade him to stay with her instead of fighting Snow. Yeh, however, is determined to face Snow and settle their score once and for all.
